Coffee table sizes: round, oval or rectangular

Mesa de centro Verona ovalada de travertino y madera clara

The short answer: as an interior design guide, the length of the coffee table is around two thirds of the length of the sofa, with about 40-45 cm of clearance between the sofa and the table, and its height is similar to the seat or slightly lower. With a 3-seater sofa, that means a table of about 120-140 cm. If the living room is narrow or has a lot of foot traffic, a round or oval shape saves space because it has no corners.

The three measurements that matter

Length. A table of around two thirds of the sofa is well proportioned: it is long enough to hold a tray and everyone's cups, and leaves a stretch of sofa free on each side to sit or rest an arm.

Clearance. Between the edge of the sofa and the table it is best to leave about 40-45 cm: you can reach the table without leaning forward and walk past sideways without tripping. Below that, the table gets in the way; above 50 cm, it is no longer within easy reach.

Height. Usually the table sits at the height of the sofa seat or a little below. A low table lets you see the whole sofa and gives a more relaxed living room; a taller one works better if you are going to eat or work at it.

Round, oval or rectangular

The shape depends on the living room and on the route of whoever crosses it, not on a trend.

  • Rectangular: goes with a straight sofa and a long living room. It makes good use of the length, but its corners sit at knee height, and at children's height.
  • Oval: keeps the length of a rectangular table without corners. It is the shape that best suits a 3-seater sofa when clearance is tight.
  • Round: works in almost square living rooms, with two armchairs facing each other or a corner sofa. For a small round table, a diameter of about 60 to 90 cm is usually enough if the sofa is a 2-seater; with 3 seats it falls short.

Right now we do not have a round coffee table in the shop: the soft shapes we do have are the oval Verona and the organic outline of the Veta. If you are looking for a small round one, write to the studio and we will guide you.

The pieces, with their measurements

Piece Shape and measurements Material What it brings
Verona Coffee Table Oval, 133.5 × 66.5 cm, height 33 cm Travertine and light fluted wood No corners in the walkway; lets you see the whole sofa
Oria Coffee Table 120 × 60 cm Carved mango wood with a light marble top Room for books, candles and a tray
Veta Coffee Table Height 27 cm, organic outline Marble top on mango wood spheres A very low table for a relaxed living room

The Veta product page gives the height, not the length: ask us for the figure before deciding whether your sofa suits such a low piece.

An example

A 3-seater sofa about 210 cm long. Two thirds is about 140 cm: the Verona Coffee Table, at 133.5 cm, comes close to that proportion. Its oval shape and 66.5 cm depth leave, with the sofa at 40-45 cm, a clear route across the living room. At 33 cm high it sits below a usual seat, so the sofa is seen in full. If the sofa is about 180 cm long, the Oria, at 120 × 60 cm, takes up exactly two thirds. For a living room with warm light and several layers, see also how to light the living room.

If you want to check the size before buying, mark the outline on the floor with masking tape and see whether the 40-45 cm clearance holds.

Limits

These are guidelines, not rules. A very small living room calls for a shorter table even if it breaks the two-thirds rule, and an armchair or a large rug changes the space available to walk. If the table is marble or travertine, bear in mind that they are natural stones with weight and pores: the guide to ceramic or marble explains the care they need. And if what you are looking for is the dining table, the measurements are different: we explain them in what size of dining table to choose.

Frequently asked questions

What size of coffee table do I need?
Around two thirds of the length of the sofa, with about 40-45 cm of clearance to it. For a 3-seater sofa, about 120-140 cm.

Round or oval coffee table?
Round if the living room is almost square; oval if the sofa is long and clearance is tight, because it keeps the length without corners.

What size is a small round coffee table?
As a guide, between 60 and 90 cm in diameter, for a 2-seater sofa or a corner with armchairs.

How high should a coffee table be?
The height of the sofa seat or a little less. A low table, such as the 33 cm Verona or the 27 cm Veta, lets you see the whole sofa.
