Ceramic or marble: which dining table top to choose

Mesa Altea de mármol natural

The short answer: if the table is used every day and you have children, choose ceramic: it needs no sealing and wipes clean with a damp cloth. If you want natural stone with its own veining and are happy to look after it, choose marble: it is porous and must be sealed every year.

What each technical sheet says

Ceramic (Livia and Aria) Natural marble (Altea)
Top 6 mm ceramic with a marble finish on a board, 2.5 cm total thickness Natural marble, each top with its own veining and shading
Cleaning Damp cloth and mild soap Damp cloth and pH-neutral soap; dry lemon, vinegar or wine straight away
Sealing Not needed Stone sealer once or twice a year
Weak point The edge: avoid sharp knocks Acids, which stain it if not wiped dry
Weight Livia: 64 kg (180 × 90 cm) Altea: 98 kg (round, 120 cm)

How to decide

Think about what is going to happen to the table. A ring from a wine glass, a hot dish or homework done in felt tip is normal dining table use. Ceramic tolerates all of it without maintenance. Natural marble tolerates it if you look after it: coasters, immediate cleaning of acids and sealer once or twice a year.

Marble has one advantage that ceramic imitates but does not match: every top is different. If that individuality matters to you, the upkeep is a reasonable price.

An example

The Altea table, round at 120 cm, weighs 98 kg, more than the 180 × 90 cm Livia table at 64 kg. If you are going to move the table or carry it up a staircase, that figure matters more than the look.

Limits

This comparison uses the sheets for our own pieces, not a general rule for all manufacturers. Other ceramics or marbles may need different care. Always follow the instructions on the sheet for the piece you buy.
