Living room rug sizes: three layouts and which size to choose

The short answer: as an interior design guide, the living room rug should be wider than the sofa, about 15-20 cm on each side if space allows, and leave 25 to 45 cm of bare floor to the walls. Common sizes are 160 × 230, 200 × 290 or 300, and 240 × 340 cm. For a 3-seater sofa, the safest option is to start at 200 × 290 and go up to 240 × 340 if the living room has room.

The three placements

Before choosing the size, decide how it will be placed. The same rug looks different depending on where the furniture rests.

All legs on. Sofa, armchairs and coffee table all sit on the rug. It is the placement that ties the group together most and the one that calls for the largest rug. It works in large living rooms and with a corner sofa.

Front legs only. The sofa rests its front legs on the rug and the back legs on the floor. It is the most common solution: it ties the sofa to the rug without needing an enormous size, and it suits most medium-sized living rooms.

Floating rug in front of the sofa. No leg touches it. It sits about 20-30 cm from the sofa and organises the coffee table area. It is the option for small or narrow living rooms. Make sure it is clearly wider than the coffee table, so the table sits inside it with room to spare.

Table: sofa, placement and size

Sofa Suggested length Placement Rug size
2-seater 160-190 cm Floating or front legs 160 × 230 cm
3-seater 200-230 cm Front legs 200 × 290 or 300 cm
3-seater 200-230 cm All legs on 240 × 340 cm
Corner sofa 250-300 cm on the long side All legs on 240 × 340 cm at minimum; larger if there is space

These are starting measurements. Sofa length varies between manufacturers, so measure yours first and add those 15-20 cm per side to find the minimum width of the rug.

Distance to the wall

A rug that reaches the wall shrinks the living room; one that is too small leaves it floating. As a guide, leave 25 to 45 cm of visible floor all around. That margin frames the rug and lets you see the floor, which helps the living room feel more spacious. If the living room door opens onto the rug, check that the edge does not catch on it.

Colour counts too. According to Zaida, light tones visually widen a space and dark ones draw it in and give intimacy. In a small living room, a light rug helps the floor gain depth.

An example

A living room with a 3-seater sofa of about 210 cm and a Verona Coffee Table, 133.5 × 66.5 cm, in front. If you want all legs on, the 240 × 340 cm rug leaves about 15 cm on each side of the sofa. If the living room is tighter, a 200 × 290 cm one with the front legs on it still ties the group together. In both cases the Galea Rug, light on a beige base, acts as the 60% of the colour rule; the guide to coffee table sizes explains how to size the table so it does not overhang the rug.

Limits

These measurements are guidelines, not rules. A narrow living room or one with a door in the middle may call for a smaller, floating rug. If you have a dining table in the same space, this guide does not apply: the dining rug must extend beyond the table far enough for the chairs to stay on it when pulled out. And always mark the outline on the floor with masking tape before buying.

Frequently asked questions

What size of rug should I put in the living room?
It depends on the sofa and the placement. As a guide: 160 × 230 cm for a 2-seater sofa, 200 × 290 or 300 cm for a 3-seater and 240 × 340 cm if you want all legs on.

How much wider than the sofa should the rug be?
About 15-20 cm on each side, if space allows. If it does not fit, rest only the front legs of the sofa on it.

What rug size counts as large for a living room?
One of 240 × 340 cm or more, which lets you place the sofa, armchairs and table with all legs on it.

How far from the wall should the living room rug be?
Between 25 and 45 cm as a guide. That way the floor shows around it and the living room looks more spacious.
