Timeless decor: how to get a home that never goes out of date

The short answer: timeless decor comes from splitting the home into two groups. The structure (solid wood or natural stone furniture, walls and floors in neutral tones) is bought for decades, and the layers (cushions, throws, pictures) are renewed whenever you fancy. With a few well-chosen large pieces and textiles you can change for under €100, the living room is updated without being redone.

The idea: you do not decorate for a season

Interior designer Zaida Muñoz, creative director of Zach & Decor, summed it up in Nuevo Estilo (7 October 2025): “an interior is not designed for a season, but to accompany people's lives for years”. According to Zaida, that durability is achieved with layers, that is, with “cushions, upholstery or wallpapers that can be renewed over time without having to redo the whole home”.

The press describes the studio with the same logic. El Confidencial Digital presents its approach as personalised timeless interior design and argues that choosing the timeless is a statement of principles: designing with perspective, purpose and authenticity.

What lasts for years and what gets renewed

Group Piece Material and size Why it works
Structure (lasts for years) Selva Chest of Drawers Solid oak, 160 or 180 cm, in light oak, dark oak, walnut or ash Made to order, and oak gains tone and depth over the years
Structure (lasts for years) Altea Dining Table Natural marble top, 120 cm in diameter, faceted solid mango base Each top is cut from a different block: the veining never repeats
Structure (lasts for years) Verona Coffee Table Travertine and fluted light wood, 133.5 × 66.5 cm and 33 cm high Brings together two materials that age well in a living room
Layer (renewed) Noor Cushion Mottled cotton in browns, 50 × 50 cm, removable cover Changes the tone of the sofa for €57
Layer (renewed) Aveline Throw Chenille knit, 130 × 170 cm, in beige or white Adds touch and can be stored or swapped with the season
Layer (renewed) Serena Wall Art Canvas in white and beige with a wooden frame, two designs Moves from wall to wall without touching the rest

How to apply it in three steps

1. Invest first in what does not change. A solid oak chest of drawers, a stone table or a sofa with a good frame are the pieces you use most and the ones it makes least sense to replace. Choose simple lines and materials with grain: they age better than glossy or very pronounced finishes.

2. Keep the base neutral. Walls and floor in sand, ivory or stone tones, with the wood in the background. It is the split we explain in the 60-30-10 rule: colour lives in the 10% you can change.

3. Renew in layers. Change cushions, throws and pictures whenever you want a different atmosphere. The tension between a classic piece and a current textile, according to Zaida, is what gives the home character.

Maintenance: the practical side counts too

A timeless home has to withstand everyday life. Zaida puts it plainly: “When it comes to maintenance, I am very practical.” Her approach is to choose washable finishes, resistant lacquers and stain-resistant fabrics, so that the well-kept look does not suffer with use. In the shop, the Nuba Swivel Armchair is upholstered in water-repellent, stain-resistant beige cotton, and for the dining table we have a guide on which surface to choose so it does not stain. Removable covers, like the one on the Noor Cushion, make cleaning easier.

An example: a living room that lasts

Ivory walls and a light wood floor. In front of the sofa, the Verona coffee table, 133.5 × 66.5 cm, with its 33 cm height that lets you see the whole sofa. On the wall, a Serena Wall Art piece. On the sofa, two Noor Cushions at 50 × 50 cm and the Aveline Throw at 130 × 170 cm folded over the arm. In two years, the picture and the textiles can be different; the table and the wall will keep working just the same.

Limits

Timeless does not mean all beige or giving up colour: it means colour comes in through the layer you change. Solid and stone pieces cost more to buy, and they are heavy, so it pays to measure the space and the access routes before ordering them. If your budget is tight, start with a single structural piece and complete the room with textiles.

Frequently asked questions

What is timeless decor?
Decor designed to last for years: a neutral structure and fine materials, with colour and style in layers that get renewed, such as cushions, throws and pictures.

How do I decorate a living room in a timeless way?
With a neutral base, a quality wood or stone table and piece of furniture, and textiles and pictures you can change without touching the rest.

Which materials never go out of fashion in a home?
Natural ones with grain: solid oak, marble, travertine, linen and cotton. They age well and go with almost any style.

Can you have colour in a timeless home?
Yes, in the layers you change: cushions, throws, pictures or objects. That way the colour is renewed without redoing the home.
