The short answer: to style cushions on a sofa, pick one accent colour that takes up around 10 % of the room, mix two or three different textures and vary the sizes. A pair of 50 × 50 cm cushions at the corners, a different one in the centre and a throw over the arm give a tidy result on a three-seater sofa. Three to five cushions is usually enough.
Colour: the 10 % rule
The sofa is usually part of the neutral base of the living room, so cushions are the natural place for the accent. In the 60-30-10 rule, the 10 % is the lively colour you can change without touching anything else. Interior designer Zaida Muñoz, creative director of Zach & Decor, spells it out for the living room in Nuevo Estilo: “a touch of deep blue or olive green in cushions or art helps create a serene atmosphere”. Choose one main colour and, at most, one supporting colour, and repeat it in two or three places in the room.
Texture: the same colour says different things
Two cushions in the same tone look different depending on the fabric. Zaida explains it like this: “touch is what turns a palette into an experience. A colour seen in velvet does not say the same as the same tone in raw linen; one invites ceremony, the other relaxation”. For a living room in daily use, combine a smooth fabric with a textured one. For example, the Arena Cushion, in sand-coloured linen with perimeter embroidery, next to the Noor Cushion, in mottled cotton with fringed edges.
Size: vary it without creating clutter
As a guide, use one large cushion at each end of the sofa and a smaller one, or one of a different shape, in front. The Noor Cushion measures 50 × 50 cm, a size that works as a base on most sofas. Place them in an odd number (three or five) for a more relaxed feel, and in pairs if you prefer symmetry. A throw such as the Aveline Throw, at 130 × 170 cm, over an arm or the back adds one more layer without taking up a seat.
Which cushions to choose for your sofa colour
| Sofa | Cushion base | Accent | Pieces in the shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beige | Sand and brown tones, which add depth without breaking the calm | Soft green | Arena Cushion (linen), Noor Cushion (browns and creams), Allure Cushion (beige jute with greens) |
| Grey | Warm tones that offset the coolness of grey: sand, toasted, brown | Green or a touch of deep blue | Noor Cushion, Allure Cushion, Aveline Throw in beige |
| Blue | Sand or cream linen, which softens the blue | Mottled brown as a second tone | Arena Cushion, Noor Cushion, Aveline Throw in white |
The combination in the last case is the one Zaida describes: “If I introduce classic mouldings, in off-white, I pair them with a contemporary sofa, in petrol blue, and cushions in sand linen”.
An example: a beige three-seater sofa
At the ends, an Arena Cushion (linen) and a Noor Cushion of 50 × 50 cm. In the centre, an Allure Cushion, which carries the green. On the arm, the Aveline Throw in beige, 130 × 170 cm. In front, a low table in stone or light wood. The green of the Allure can be repeated in a plant or an object, and the two tones of beige and brown hold the whole together. Check the size of the Arena Cushion and the Allure Cushion before ordering, so you can split them well between the two ends.
Limits
There is no required number: on a small two-seater sofa two or three cushions are enough, and in a small living room it is best not to overload. If the sofa already has a pattern or an intense colour, keep the cushions in plain, neutral tones. And remember that tones look different on screen and at home: look at the sample in the light of your own living room.
