The short answer: a centrepiece works when it stays out of the way. Keep the arrangement under about 30 cm tall, or make it very tall and very slim so you can see through it, so that guests can see each other. Make it between a third and half the length of the table, and compose it with three heights: one low piece, one medium and one tall and slender.
Height: so guests can see each other
A table is for sitting and talking. A 50 cm vase in the middle cuts the line of sight in two and forces everyone to talk around it. As a guide, around 30 cm is the comfortable ceiling for someone seated; above that, it only works if the piece is very slim (a candlestick, a branch) and lets you see through. If in doubt, sit in the chair and check whether you can see the face of the person opposite.
Length: in proportion to the table
The centrepiece should not fill the table. You need room for plates, glasses and serving dishes, and each place setting takes up about 30 cm of table edge. As a guide, the centrepiece is between a third and half the length of the table and stays narrow, so each guest keeps their own space.
| Table | Listed dimensions | Suggested centrepiece length | Suggested width |
|---|---|---|---|
| Livia Dining Table, oval | 180 × 90 cm, seats 6 comfortably (60 cm per person) | 60 to 90 cm, in a line | About 25 cm |
| Aria Dining Table | 180 × 90 cm, seats 6 comfortably and 8 on occasion | 60 to 90 cm, in a line | About 25 cm |
| Altea Dining Table, round | 120 cm diameter | A single compact arrangement 30 to 40 cm in diameter | Centred |
On a round table, a grouped arrangement in the centre works better than a line. On a long table, a narrow line follows the shape of the table. If you want to check how many people fit at each size, see dining table dimensions.
A composition in three heights
The recipe is simple: three pieces of different heights, grouped together with space between them. A single piece looks isolated; five is already too many.
| Height | Role | Piece from the shop |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Gives a base and light close to the plate | Terra Candle Holder: metal and glass, sand finish and handcrafted texture |
| Medium | Adds volume and texture | Marfil Candle Holder: organic silhouette, textured beige finish, glass inner container |
| Tall and slim | Sets the rhythm without blocking the view | Évora Candlesticks: set of two, gold-toned metal on a cube-shaped travertine marble base |
According to their product page, the Évora candlesticks work together or apart, at different heights. That lets you place them on either side of the arrangement instead of bunching them in the middle.
Everyday version and Christmas version
Everyday. Two candle holders and a candlestick, with a low bowl or a few branches. The palette is short: sand, beige and a touch of gold. It goes together in two minutes and clears away when you need the whole table.
Christmas. Start from the same base and add more light and a note of colour. The two candlesticks with white candles on either side, the Marfil and the Terra between them, and the set of Aura LED candles, three cylindrical candles of different heights that give a warm light with no flame. It suits a table with children or the end of a sideboard. With a couple of pine or eucalyptus branches at the base, the centrepiece is already a Christmas one without changing pieces.
An example
A dining room for six with a Livia table, 180 × 90 cm. A central line of about 80 cm: the Marfil candle holder in the middle, the Terra to one side, and an Évora candlestick at each end. That leaves about 50 cm free at each end of the table, room for a serving dish. For Christmas dinner, add the Aura set to the sideboard, so the table does not fill up and the light is spread around the room.
Limits
If the table is 80 cm wide or less, or if you serve with many dishes at once, reduce the centrepiece to a single piece or leave it out. Candles with a flame need a watchful eye: do not put them under a pendant lamp or near dry branches. And the light on the table matters too: see how to combine layered lighting so the candles do not compete with an overly cold lamp.
