The short answer: an abstract painting for the living room comes down to four decisions. First, whether it will be a colour accent (the 10% of the palette) or an extension of the neutral base. Second, scale: as a guide, about two thirds of the width of the sofa. Third, technique: hand-painted or printed. And fourth, whether it goes as a pair or as a single piece. With a 190 cm sofa, that means a painting or set about 125 cm wide.
First decision: the palette
There are two ways to use an abstract painting in a living room. The first is for it to be the accent: the contrasting part of the palette, along the lines of the 60-30-10 rule. It works with a neutral wall and sofa and a painting with dark strokes or a vivid colour. According to Zaida, the accent serves to tell a story: “It is not just about decorating, but about telling a story with every transition, with every accent”.
The second is for the painting to extend the neutral base. The beiges, sands and whites of the painting repeat those of the sofa and the rug, and the wall gains texture without adding contrast. It is the calmest option, and the one that ages best if you change the cushions every season.
Second decision: scale
A small painting above a large sofa gets lost. As an interior design guide, the painting or set should take up about two thirds of the width of the sofa, and hang about 15-25 cm above the backrest. With a 210 cm sofa, that is about 140 cm. A single large-format painting solves it; so do two medium-sized ones with a gap of 5 to 10 cm between them. If the living room is large, you can go beyond two thirds; if it is small, less.
Third decision: hand-painted or printed
As a general criterion, a hand-painted piece has variations in brushstroke and relief: no two are alike, and that is why it holds up up close. A print always reproduces the same image, is more regular and tends to be more affordable. Neither is better in an absolute sense: the hand-painted one needs a wall where it is seen up close; the print works in hallways or in sets of several pieces.
Of the five pieces you see below, only the Arena Wall Art product page states that it is hand-painted. For the others, write to us and we will confirm the technique before you buy.

The product pages for Bruma, Serena, Arena and Caliza do not give the exact size: only Pleamar states 60 × 90 cm. If you need to work out the scale, ask us the size before deciding. About the Arena Wall Art: it is made to order, you can reserve it now and it ships within 10 to 15 days of its arrival.
Fourth decision: pair or single piece
A pair spreads the weight across a wide wall and gives rhythm; it is what a 3-seater sofa or a corner sofa calls for. A single piece concentrates attention and suits a small living room or a narrow chest of drawers better. Bruma, Arena and Caliza are two different compositions designed to hang together, and you can also take just one. Serena and Pleamar are sold individually, and two models together make a pair.
An example
A living room with a sofa of about 190 cm, an ivory wall and a light rug. Two thirds is about 125 cm: two Pleamar paintings, 60 × 90 cm hung vertically, with 5 to 10 cm between them, take up about 125-130 cm and extend the neutral base. If you prefer the wall to be the contrast, swap the set for the pair of Bruma Wall Art, whose dark strokes set the 10% accent, and keep the rest of the living room in beiges.
Limits
The proportions are guidelines. If your living room already has a lot of pattern, an abstract painting with bold strokes competes instead of adding; choose a neutral one then. And if what you are after is texture that changes with the light, first read the guide to textured wall art, where we explain how to hang it and at what height.
